Income Tax

If you have lost a spouse or civil partner, your annual tax allowances might change. For example, if you get additional income (eg in the form of bereavement benefits or pension payments) you may need to pay more income tax. If you were getting the Married Couple’s Allowance, you will still be entitled to receive it up to the end of the current tax year (ie 5th April) but not for any following years. For these reasons, you need to ensure that HMRC are aware of the change in your circumstances. If you have been able to use the Tell Us Once Service, HMRC, DWP, Veterans UK and your local council should have been informed.
